[Tutorial] Install Android 4.4 KitKat on a GSM Galaxy Nexus

Halloween was a wonderful day for every Android-fanboy this time round as it was when Google released the Nexus 5 and along with it Android 4.4 KitKat. Although, for some (Galaxy Nexus owners), it wasn’t as good a day. Google officially announced that it’s Galaxy Nexus (both GSM and Verizon variants) would not receive any Android 4.4 KitKat goodness. To put it in another way, the Galaxy Nexuses will be stuck on Android 4.3 for eternity; ..and then the good Lord said, “let there be XDA”.

According to XDA Developers, the  following AOSP ROM is quite stable (it is!) with the exception of a few isolated issues like animation and graphical glitches (did not bother us much) which will be fixed in the upcoming releases.

Pre-requisites to flashing this ROM 

  • Back up data and settings using a recommended custom recovery tool, like ClockworkMod (CWM) or TWRP, as it creates a complete image of the existing phone setup.
  • Ensure USB debugging mode is enabled on the phone, by navigating to Settings > Developer Options (if you don’t see Developer Options, follow this pastie -> http://bit.ly/1h0xTLg)
  • You must be rooted on your current firmware before updating and have a custom recovery installed. We suggest using ClockworkMod recovery.

Downloads Required

Steps involved in updating the phone

  • Connect your Galaxy Nexus to your computer and transfer the files you downloaded onto it’s storage.
  • Power off the phone and disconnect its USB cable from computer.
  • Boot the phone into Fastboot mode by pressing and holding Volume UpVolume Down and Power buttons together.
  • Once the device reboots, you should see something like this —Fastboot_gnex
  • Use the Volume up and Volume down buttons to navigate to the red banner above the opened up Android to say “Recovery mode” and then press the Power button.
  • In ClockworkMod recovery, perform a full data wipe task by choosing Wipe Data/Factory Reset (use volume buttons to navigate and power button to select the desired option in recovery).
  • Wait until the wipe process completes and then perform Wipe Cache Partition. Let the process complete and then select Wipe Dalvik Cache from advance option. This will prevent ROM related errors or boot loop issues.
  • Once the wipe process is done, return to main recovery menu and select Install Zip from SD card.
  • Then select Choose zip from SD card. Now, locate the Android 4.4 ROM zip file you copied earlier to the phone and select it by tapping Power button. Confirm the ROM installation on next screen and let the installation begin.
  • Then, repeat the previous step for installing Google Apps as well.
  • After Google apps is also installed, go back and tap on reboot system now in the recovery menu. The phone will now reboot automatically. The first boot might take about five minutes to complete. So, don’t worry!
  • Once rebooted, you will be greeted with the Android setup wizard. Set your phone up and enjoy!

Steps involved to get get root access on the 4.4 ROM

  • Install the Nexus Root Toolkit you downloaded earlier. It will extract certain files so make sure you install in within a folder.
  • Once installed, you will be asked to select your device. Select Galaxy Nexus GSM/HSPA+  and the select you ROM as Custom ROM – KK. Then, let the toolkit do it’s thing until you’re greeted with the following dialog box.

  • Under the Root section  tick Custom Recovery if it’s un-ticked and then press Root.
  • From here on, just follow the instructions the pop up on your computer and you’ll be fine.
  • Once, the process ends, you will an up and running KitKat ROM with root access.

[Tutorial] How To Install Windows 8 Pro For Free (100% working)

Disclaimer: First of all,this is only recommended for people who want try Windows 8 for before actually buying it.We call know that Windows 8 has some big issues with what developers can use on it and where they can use it i.e. dev. software only runs on x64.So,people should check out exactly what they want before they purchase it.That’s what we think..Please don not pirate Microsoft software just to save money.Microsoft has worked really hard on this project so respect that and use original software.

With that out of the way,let’s dig into the tutorial part of this article!

We’ve been using Windows 8 for quite some now and I must say,atleast ‘I’ and impressed.Yes,’impressed’ but not ‘blown away’.
There is no doubt that Windows 8 is gonna make a good tablet OS but that’s not what Microsoft is know for right? They’re known for their desktop OS i.e Windows.Now,agreed that they are adapting and trying to make a mark in this tablet and smartphone hungry world but to be honest,I loved Windows 7 and am a little disappointed that Windows 8 isn’t that big an upgrade (keeping only PCs in mind).

But hey! that still does not mean I’m not gonna install it? And I’m sure you wanna install it too.So,let’s get started with the things you’ll need while and before installing:

  • A compatible system (check the requirements here)
  • Windows 8 .iso file (only download the one you want)
  • Windows 8 Activator (will be used in the end) -> Download this and keep it ready on another USB or partition on your computer.
  • uTorrent (it’s used to download torrent files.You can use any other torrent client as well.) ->
  • WinRar (to unarchive the .tgz activator file) -> Download this on Windows 8 using IE.
  • A 4 GB or more USB drive or a single-layered DVD (I suggest using a DVD)
  • Basic knowledge of how one boots into a USB/DVD via your BIOS
  • 1-2 hours and loads of  patience

Once that’s sorted out,just follow along.

Installation

  1. Backup your data on your current OS.
  2. Use this tutorial to make a bootable USB/DVD for Windows 8 using the .iso you downloaded earlier.
  3. Insert the USB/DVD and reboot your system.
  4. Enter your BIOS settings/boot menu(i suggest getting into your boot menu).Since every BIOS has a different method of doing so,you can look up the hotkey for your specific BIOS/boot menu in the motherboard/laptop’s manual or use Google.Once,you are into your BIOS/boot menu,select USB for your USB drive or select DVD-ROM if you’re using a DVD.
  5. Once you do that,the Windows 8 installation will start and it’ll ask you for a CD key.Use this XKY4K-2NRWR-8F6P2-448RF-CRYQH. After that just follow installation wizard and make sue you read everything properly while doing so.Once,you’re at the ‘Windows update’ section,turn them OFF completely to avoid any issues later on.Also,make sure you select the right partition to install Windows 8 on to avoid any data loss.
  6. When the wizard finishes installing,it’ll reboot your system and boot it up into the Windows 8 setup wizard where it’ll ask for you to setup accounts and what not.It is pretty self-explanatory so you shouldn’t have any problem there.If you do,you can always contact us or comment below.
  7. After you’ve gone through with the account setup,your computer should restart and boot back into Windows 8.

Now,right now you’ll have a working Windows 8 OS but it’ll not be activated i.e. you wont be able to access the personalization section and also wont be able to install Microsoft Office 13.To rectify that,follow the instructions below or feel free to close your browser and enjoy Windows 8.But,why would anyone do that right?

Activation

  1. Open up the Activator you downloaded earlier using WinRar and extract it on your desktop.
  2. In the extracted files,run ‘Windows 8 Pro Final Activator.exe’ as admin and let it do it’s thing.
  3. Once that’t done,reboot your system.
  4. That’s it! Your Windows 8 copy should be activated and fully functional.

For Dual Booting with any other version of Windows

The procedure remains the same – Just follow the same instructions and the Windows 8 bootloader will handle the rest.

[Tutorial] How To Install Cydia On A Jailbroken iPhone,iPad or iPod Touch Running iOS 6.

iOS 6 has been out for quite some time now and jailbreak devs are working really hard to make a user-friendly jailbreak for the masses.But until then there is a work around one can use to install Cydia on A4 devices.

Before you proceed,please note that your A4 device is already jailbroken with Redsn0w.You can read about the procedure here before you try it out.

Guide for people using a Mac

Step 1: On your iOS device, go to Settings >Wi-Fi > and click the arrow next to your connected Wi-Fi router. Find your IP address for your Wi-Fi connection. In my example, my IP is 192.168.1.100

Step 2: On a computer connected to the same Wi-Fi network, open the Terminal app.

Step 3: In terminal type: ssh root@192.168.1.100 (be sure to change the IP address to match your iOS device’s IP)

Step 4: After a few seconds, it should connect, and prompt you for your iOS device’s password. The password is alpine

Step 5: Once connected, paste the following into the terminal:

wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh

Step 6: After a minute or so of scrolling prompts, your iOS device should reboot, and Cydia will be installed. If you get any permission errors on the terminal, just ignore them.

Guide for people using Windows

Step 1 :Download putty

Step 2 : You need to be connected to a WiFi network. Go To Settings > WiFi > Tap the blue arrow next to your WiFi network and see your IP address.

Step 3 : Open putty in your computer (your computer and iDevice should be connected to the same wifi network) and enter your IP address as the username.

Step 4 : Putty will ask if you want to connect. Type ‘yes’ and it’ll ask for a password. Type alpine.

Step 5 : Type

wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh

Step  : That’s it.Enjoy Cydia on your iOS 6 running device.

[Tutorial] How To Jailbreak A4 Devices On iOS 6.

 

The iPhone dev team have updated Redsn0w, adding full support for final public release of iOS 6 on select devices with official version of Cydia, along with tons of new features which are detailed after the jump.

Redsn0w 0.9.15b1 for both Windows and Mac not only adds support for tethered jailbreak of iOS 6 on A4 based devices, but also for re-restoring and downgrading of select devices from iOS 6 to an older firmware, or in case of re-restoring, from iOS 5.x to iOS 5.x.

Supported devices:

First and foremost, it is important to note this is a tethered jailbreak and is only meant for devices boasting an A4 Processor (or below), namely: the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the 4th-gen iPod Touch. Devices with A5 (iPhone 4S, iPad 2), A5X (iPad 3) and A6 (iPhone 5) processors are not supported at this point. Hacktivation + baseband preservation support has also been added for iPhone 4 and 3GS.

This latest version of Redsn0w does not require the user to go through the trouble of downloading and pointing the app to the iOS 6 IPSW for the jailbreak (the older version of Redsn0w, as mentioned in our previous jailbreak iOS 6 guide, required manual IPSW selection). Instead, the latest Redsn0w recognizes the firmware already installed on your device, downloads the required files and proceeds with the jailbreak. It’s that simple. Cydia, as mentioned above, is now also included as part of this Redsn0w’s release.

Jailbreaking is done in the same way as it is done with iOS 5.

Note for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS Ultrasn0w unlockers: You will first need to preserve your older baseband to be eligible for unlock. Click on “Extras” option and then select “Custom IPSW” option. Select the required iOS 6 IPSW file for your device, and let Redsn0w make the custom firmware for you. Once done, enter Pwned DFU mode by selecting “Pwned DFU” from Redsn0w’s Extras option, and then restore to this custom firmware.

How to boot your device tethered on iOS 6:

Since this is a tethered iOS 6 jailbreak, you will need to boot your device in a tethered mode every time the device is turned off and back on. Booting in tethered mode is easy, and can be achieved using Redsn0w: click on the “Extras” from the main screen and then simply click on “Just Boot” option. Follow the on-screen instructions. Once done, you will be rebooted back into tethered-jailbreak mode.

What’s new in Redsn0w 0.9.15b2?

New re-restore features have also been introduced in this version of Redsn0w. It now allows third-gen iPad and iPhone 4S users to RE-restore to any version of iOS 5.x even if Apple is currently not signing the software, provided that your SHSH blobs are saved for iOS 5.x, and the device is currently running iOS 5.x (not iOS 6) that too updated via iTunes, not OTA. iPad 2 users will also be able to downgrade if they have blobs for both 4.x and 5.x saved – even from iOS 6. The A4 based iPhone 4, 3GS and 4th-gen iPod Touch users can of course always downgrade to an older firmware for untethered jailbreak provided that they have SHSH blobs saved for the firmware they want to downgrade on.

[Tutorial] How To Make A Gold Card With Any Micro SD Card

I. Requirements before you begin

1) An SD card (Any brand)

2) A working phone which can connect to the computer as a disk drive ( You should be able to see the SD card as a removable disk in My Computers) or just use a Micro USB card reader.

3) Gold card Tool by klutsh

II. Setting up ADB

Follow these instructions to setup ADB for your phone, then come back to this procedure and continue.

III. Creating a Goldcard

Automatic method with a tool

1. Put the memory card you want to use for the GoldCard into your phone.

2. With the memory card in your phone, click on Settings, SD and Phone storage, then click Unmount SD card. Once it unmounts, click Format SD card. (Please keep in mind that some memory cards don’t work, and this will erase all data on your SD Card so back all the data up first to your computer)

3. On the Phone, goto Settings, Applications, Development and then make sure USB Debugging is checked.

4 (a )Open up the Gold Card creator that you downloaded earlier and Click on ‘Get CID’ (At this moment,your SD Card must appear in My computers as a removable disk.That’s the only way this will work.).Also,if the CID doesn’t appear in your first attempt,select ‘MMC0’ and try again.

4 (b) Then,once you have the CID,go to the lick provided and download for goldcard.img and save it wherever you want to (On your desktop preferably).

4 (c) Select your SD card from the dr0p down list and then select your Goldcard.img.Once all that’s done ; click on Patch MMC and wait until you get a popup telling you that the SD card is now a gold card.

Manual method for people who can’t get the tool to work 

1. Put the memory card you want to use for the GoldCard into your phone.2. With the memory card in your phone, click on Settings, SD and Phone storage, then click Unmount SD card. cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid

(There is no spaces in this line EXCEPT right after the word cat in the beginning, make sure to put that space in).

5. A code will display, write the code down (MAKE SURE TO WRITE IT DOWN EXACTLY!)

6. Now with the code written down, simply write it backwards (it must be reversed, so if the code is 123456789, slowly write it backwards and make sure not to make a mistake so it becomes 987654321 then continue to the next step).

7. Now, on your computer, goto http://psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard and enter your email in the appropriate field and for CID enter the reversed CID you just copied down BUT REPLACE THE FIRST 2 DIGITS WITH 2 ZEROS! (i.e. 12345678910 becomes 00345678910). *Thanks to Viper for providing these Goldcards for FREE!

8. Click continue and then download the goldcard.img to your computer.

9. Now, go to http://download.cnet.com/HxD-Hex-Editor/3000-2352-10891068.html?part=dl-HxDHexEdi&subj=uo&tag=button to download the HxD Hex Editor. Save it and install it to your computer.

10. Take your SD card out of your phone and put it into the SD adapter it came with. Then put that into your computer so it shows up on your computer as Removable Disk.

11. Open the Hex Editor (Run as Administrator if one Vista or Windows 7) and click on the Extra tab, then click on Open Disk. Under Physical Disk select Removable Disk (your SD card you just put into the computer). Make sure to UNcheck “Open as ReadOnly”. Click OK.

12. Goto the Extra tab again and click Open Disk Image. Open up the goldcard.img that you saved from your email. You should now have two tabs, one is the SD card (Removable Disk) and the other is the goldcard.img
Press OK when prompted for Sector Size 512 (Hard Disks/Floppy Disks).

13. Click on the Goldcard.img tab and click on the Edit tab and click Select All. Then click on the Edit tab again and click Copy.

14. Click on the Removable Disk tab (Your SD Card) and select offset 00000000 to 00000170 then click on the Edit tab and click Paste Write.

15. Click on File then click Save.

16. Close the Hex Editor.

17. Test what we’ve done: Disconnect the Adaptor and reconnect and see if the card appears in My Computers.If it doesn then you’re all set but if windows tells you that you have to format the card then you need to format it and try again.

That’s it folks! You should be able to root your previously un-rootable phones now.

Reported Issues:

Issue: I get no such directory or file when I type:

cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid

Solution: Try to type this instead (replace the 1′s after mmc with zeros):

cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:*/cid

Issue: Having difficulty with the cat command…

Solution:

“Plug your phone into your computer with the going to be gold card
Go to my computer
Make sure you mount your phone to your computer
Right click after mounted FORMAT on your drive NOT IN THE SETTINGS>FORMAT MODE (trust me)
dont do quick format let it run its course
After it has completed formatting come back to the steps starting at step number 4.”

[Tutorial] How to ROOT & Get a Partial Recovery for Droid Razr XT910 [Windows Only]

-Install USB Drivers

-Extract Doomlords Package

-Enable debugging on device. Settings -> Application -> Development -> Tick USB Debugging-Connect device to PC

-Test if device is recognised in command prompt using ADB Devices (Optional)

-Run the Runme.bat file in Doomlords package.

-After the reboot install the Bionic Bootstrap Recovery.

-Open Bionic Bootstrap Recovery and click Bootstrap Recovery (After Success), you can now reboot into recovery.
